gennys dinerFor the inaugural edition of Now With Tomato, which will feature our favorite eating places across the USA, we decided to start at home in Louisville, Kentucky, and JC's favorite food, the cheeseburger.

In the words of Blackjack Lanza, "You can't fuck up a cheeseburger". JC has eaten them from one end of the country, in cities large and small, consuming enough cattle byproduct to be responsible for the slaughter of every cow on the Ponder osa. In Louisville, the place to go for a cheeseburger for decades has been Genny's Diner.

Located at 2223 Frankfort Avenue in the Derby City, Genny's Diner is a local landmark, with a giant cheeseburger on top of the sign out front serving as a beacon for hungry Louisvillians. The parking lot, and the diner itself, are small, (or quaint depending on your point of view), but the portions are big enough to make up for it.


Genny's features standard diner fare, with a few unique exceptions, cooked and served by folks who have worked there for years. On our visit, we started with a big order of frickle pickles, one of their trademark appetizers. It's a big bowl of deep fried dill pickle slices, resembling greenish-tinted potato chips, served with a tasty dipping sauce. It was a perfect start to get our saliva flowing for the hot wings to come.

Genny's hot wings are not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach. They're big, they're meaty, but most of all they're HOT! Dipping them in a big cup of ranch dressing almost produced steam. JC began sweating under his eyes and tapped out after 3 or 4, but a more courageous young member of our party, who has an iron constitution and enjoys gargling with tabasco sauce, plowed through about a dozen.

Genny's features great dinner plates at affordable prices, like pot roast, meat loaf and the like, but Stacey chose a Louisville favorite, the Hot Brown. Originated at Louisville's Brown Hotel over 50 years ago, every restaurant in town has their take on the dish, which is basically a souped-up open-faced sandwich. Slices of toast are covered with a mound of thin-sliced turkey breast, then covered with a tangy, cheesy Mornay sauce, topped with strips of crispy bacon and sliced tomato, and baked until piping hot. There are many variations around town, but Genny's stays true to the origin al recipe, and it was b ig enough for Stace y to have lunch here and a late night snack with the portion she took home Then it was time for the main event--Genny's trademark Sweet Daddy Burg er. This massive monument to gluttony measures at least 6 inches high, comes to the table with a knife stuck through the middle to keep it from falling over, and is so tall even JC's big mouth couldn't stretjims lunchch wide enough to take a bite in the traditional way. He ended up attacking from the top, then the bottom in alternating attempts.
The Sweet Daddy Burger features THREE half-pound patties stacked on a giant bun, with all the trimmings--lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle--piled on in such quantities that the dressings alone would make a meal. The sweet Da ddy sells for $13.95, but is so big, if you want cheese, which of course JC did, it's $2 extra. It's well worth it, as they piled on enough cheese to satisfy the state of Wisconsin. Some regulars have been known to down one of these bombastic burgers in less than 10 minutes, but it took JC over half an hour before he finished the last bite, edging out his 400 plus pound partner in crime, who made it through the top 2/3 of HIS burger before calling for the bell and a to-go box.

Owner Frank Ferris has been a successful Louisville businessman for decades, but Genny's Diner remains the jewel in his empire. If you're in town, and want the biggest, juiciest cheeseburger in the state of Kentucky, cruise down Frankfort Avenue and look for the giant burger, and you'll find yourself at the birthplace of the Sweet Daddy Burger, Genny's Diner!
