Gennys Diner Louisville,KY
Genny's Diner, Louisville, KY

gennys dinerFor the inaugural edition of Now With Tomato, which will feature our favorite eating places across the USA, we decided to start at home in Louisville, Kentucky, and JC's favorite food, the cheeseburger.

In the words of Blackjack Lanza, "You can't fuck up a cheeseburger". JC has eaten them from one end of the country, in cities large and small, consuming enough cattle byproduct to be responsible for the slaughter of every cow on the Ponder
osa. In Louisville, the place to go for a cheeseburger for decades has been Genny's Diner.

Located at 2223 Frankfort Avenue in the Derby City, Genny's Diner is a local landmark, with a giant cheeseburger on top of the sign out front serving as a beacon for hungry Louisvillians. The parking lot, and the diner itself, are small, (or quaint depending on your point of view), but the portions are big enough to make up for it.

Delicious Dim Sum San Francisco,CA

Delicious Dim Sum, San Francisco, CA

Last
time, Now With Tomato focused on JC's search for the biggest cheeseburger in Louisville. THIS time, Stacey searches HER hometown for authentic Dim Sum.

A straightforward name that says it all. You can completely miss this fabulous nook at 752 Jackson street in San Francisco, with the blending-in of Chinese mini-markets, bazaars, and the crowds of busy people rushing up and down the street. The busy scenes muffle the high pitched tones of an old man's "Erhu", or Chinese fiddle, as he sits on the corner playing early 1900's classics. Somehow, it "becomes" China.

Quaker Steak & Lube Sharon,PA

Quaker Steak & Lube, Pittsburg,PA

After giving Stacey her choice of reviews last month, JC's number is up on this edition of Tomato, and he chooses the holy shrine of the Buffalo Wing. Quaker Steak & Lube.

Few things rival JC's love of cheeseburgers, but a close second, whether as an appetizer before the burger bell rings, or all on their own with a pint of ranch dressing in a soup bowl as support, are buffalo wings.qsl1

qsl2Now, this doesn't mean every hooterhead in the world who deep fries a nearly naked wing and rolls it in Tabasco sauce can please him. JC appreciates the art and variety of a quality wing in all it's wonders. Buffalo Wild Wings (formerly BW3) is very good for an easily-accessible chain, with a lot of sauces, good wings and consistency from location to location. Outback Steakhouse's spicy fried wings are awesome and very different from the standard sauce-spun variety. Everybody has their own favorite "local legend" about whose wings are best. After travels from one end of the country to the other sampling wings over a 20 year period, JC proclaims without fear of contradiction that the "Best Wings in the USA", as it's slogan exclaims, is Quaker Steak & Lube.

Sabatinos Baltimore MD
Sabatino's, Baltimore, Maryland

sabatinos25This edition of Now With Tomato focuses on one of my all-time favorite restaurants, Sabatino's in Baltimore.

Our recent trip to the Charm City was allegedly for a Maryland Championship Wrestling show, but in reality was an excuse to go to Little Italy and experience Sab's one more time. In the 80's, when Baltimore was a monthly stop for the NWA, the Midnight Express and I would make a beeline from the Civic Center (now the Arena) to Sab's with our mouths watering. When we weren't staying in town overnight but flying back out on Crockett's plane, Ric Flair would have the Horsemen's limo driver bring back enough to-go food to feed the entire plane. Either way, it's too seldom these days that I get to experience Sab's, and this visit was welcome.

Sabatino's, located at 901 Fawn Street at High Street insabatinos13 the Little Italy district, has been a Baltimore tradition for decades, and it never changes, which is a good thing. It's located in an old house in the neighborhood which consists almost entirely of either old townhomes or Italian restaurants located in old townhomes, within walking distance of the Inner Harbor.

Annabel Lees Tavern
Annabel Lee Tavern, Baltimore, Maryland

This time on Tomato, Stacey checks in with a review of the Cornette's evening at Annabel Lee's Tavern in Baltimore MD.

The front door of this old haunt built in the early 1900's greets the locals with a line from the tavern's namesake Poe poem--"the happiset day, the happiest hour"--and a happy hour it is when you visit Annabel Lee's.

This black and white corner Victorian really puts the "charm" in the Charm City of Baltimore. A small tavern with a dark and mysterious look, Old wooden floors, deep burgundy walls, and Poe poems handpainted in calligraphy everywhere. The beautiful portraits of the famous poet are the work of the owner-proprieter, Kurt X. Bragunier, who has put a lot of work into the place in the few years it's been open. The period melodies in the background really added to the ambience and made you feel as if you were in another century.
